Why does a negative multiplyed by a negative equal a positive? [/idiot]

Think of it this way: "negative" really means "opposite."
so -2 x -2 is like saying "the opposite of two times the opposite of two"
and if the opposite of two is -2, then multiplying it by the opposite of two (-2) would mean taking TWO "opposite opposite twos", which is a positive 4.
Make sense?
